It's the system! Excellent rod design married to an attractive light weight large arbor reel with a great drag. Can't get any better!! I have fished a 4 wt center axis for over four years. It can handle 7X tippet with finess and a 30" rainbow with authority. Five stars are simply not enough!
5 stars here. I've been using it for a long time and have not been disappointed. I wish the handle was a little longer but that's minor.
I have both a 4wt and 5wt Center Axis and use them regularly on the San Juan River. Both rods are easy to cast, have great weight distribution and have the power to pick up a lot of line for recasts off a boat or wading. Casting with a strike indicator, split shot and a two-nymph combo, even in the wind, is no problem with the 5wt. Probably the most impressive aspect of these rods, is even the 4wt has the power to play bigger fish and steer them away from weeds and swift current. I have a 5wt G-Loomis NRX and a 4wt Orvis Helios and I would compare the Center Axis to both of these rods, and the nice thing is that the Center Axis already has an excellent reel.
Based on looks, build quality, and performance. I give this a solid 5 stars.
I have been fishing this rod/reel for two seasons. I really like the design and function of the combo system. I never have to tighten the reel onto the rod, not drop my reel by accident. I also like the single case which holds both products together for faster set up and really easy to carry on backpacking trips without sticking up to hit trees. I liked it so much bought my wife one this year as she has started to fly fish as well.
Excellent!! They nailed it with this reel.. it was between this and a Nautilus NVG.. had both in hand. The Litespeed M was a clear winner. Took it on a bonefish trip already.. smooth drag, great retrieval rate due to the largest arbor in the game, plenty of backing, fully sealed.. what else do you need? Oh.. good looks.. it’s got those too.
Especially for the price. I have the -7+ on my 8 wt rod and it does absolutely everything I need it to. I also have the guru s on a 5 wt and both work fantastic. I would highly recommend waterworks-lamson reels.
I got the Guru S -5+ for my birthday. This reel has already been on many trips. The reason I love it more than my other reels is the sealed drag. I fished in 20 degree weather, dipped my reel in the river and it didn’t freeze. That was amazing! I was so worried my day of fishing was over.
I have been addicted to fishing since I was about 4. Spinning and casting reels are what I grew up on but since then my experiences have included fly fishing the Rio Grande in CO, spearfishing reefs in Destin FL, noodling mud cats in lake Conroe, and chasing Muskie in northern MN. All that to say I love getting my hands on quality gear that performs to its purpose. This reel surpasses my expectations for the price point. This past Sunday I chased down my first redfish in the Texas grass flats and 6 more to boot. The drag is utterly flawless, the reel sounds outstanding, and the look of it on my diamondback rod is Instagram level pretty. This is one of those pieces that stands above mere functionality and edges into the world of art, which is one of the best reasons to pursue fly fishing, the quality and craftsmanship here captures that essence.
I have used this reel every day for a year. Not once have I had a problem with it ever! I keep it maintained and this is hands down the best bang for your buck and extra spools are damn near dirt cheap!! Which helps because I can get the better line for what I fish for!! I have put this reel through heat, cold, salt water, fresh water, muddy water, the dirtiest water you can fish. And it comes out like a champ. Eventually I would like to MAYBE get a different reel but I’ll be honest… I don’t think I will. I can go for calico bass in the kelp beds and swap spools and go for carp in the lakes in the same day. I can’t possibly think of ever getting a high end reel when I use this against people who use a hatch fanatic and I’ll put fish them any day. Here’s to waterworks for making a kick ass reel!!! Thank you so much for providing this reel to society! I can’t even look at others with this in my hand.
Just bought this reel for red fish and I can’t wait to use it. It is one of the simplest reels to take apart and maintain, but one of the smoothest drags and cleanest looks on the market I feel.
Just bought the Guru S -5+ at my local fly shop, very pleased with the craftsmanship of the reel and how light in hand it is, very nice reel and would definitely recommend to anyone. I’ve been fly fishing for 35 years and this is with out a doubt the best reel I’ve ever owned.
