from 291 reviewsI have had the GURU for years and saw this model and figured I'd give them a try. I now have three and they really are one of the nicest reels around, especially for the price. In addition to being a great reel, the support from Lamson has also been fantastic. Had a slight issue with one of the spools and sent it back to Lamson and they repaired and send it back to me in under two weeks. This type of quality and service at this price point is why I keep coming back to Lamson.

While the buzz on these reels tends to focus on value, these reels are quite good. I've had mine for years now and its never had a problem. In fact, its been a sweet performing reel. I plan to buy a second this spring. My first came in the three pack and what a deal that is! Did I say how light it is? Its just right in weight for me. I'm a small stream guy and its perfect for that. I'd have no problem using it on big water. In other words, its very versatile.

It's frustrating and difficult to find full cage reels. I stumbled upon this one for great lakes steelhead - it's been amazing. It cannot be overstated how important the full cage is, especially when it's November, your fingers are cold, and you are kicking yourself for not using a full cage reel. This reel more than stood up against many large steelhead. A wonderful reel!

I really like the Lockdown function, never drop you reel in the water again and the casting action and feel is spot on. Finally great rod for a reasonable price.

I bought a -7+ liquid a little over a year ago. I put it on my 7WT which I used for smallmouth fishing during the summer months. I am lucky enough to be able to fish every day during the summer, and my favorite smallmouth spots are pretty rugged, so my liquid took a beating and passed with flying colors this past summer. I’ve never had a budget reel survive the summer before.
The drag is awesome. It doesn’t come loose like the other popular budget reels, and it played plenty of fiesty 20”+ smallies this summer.
While, I’m sure a higher end reel would out perform the liquid, this reel performs well enough that I can save that money for tying materials or food on trips.

I have been using Lamson reels for a long time, American made and solid drag system were the the two reasons I went with Lamson. I had a few old litespeed reels with good quality anodization. The anodization on the Remix and some of the lower price point Lamsons are not up to the mark. These reels scratch up even with very careful use.
The final straw was when I took the reel on a fishing trip and discovered that the spool was bent. It was so bad that the spool was coming off the reel body as I was fighting a big fish. We hiked in a long distance to fish this place. It was disappointing not to be able to enjoy the fruit of a long hike.
Not having a cage for some of the bigger Remix reels is irresponsible. The cast spools are very weak. A cage would give it more integrity.
I would hasitate to buy low to mid priced modern Lamson reels. I am sure their top end products are still pretty good.
A little more care about the quality of anodization and rethinking the strength of the cast spools on bigger size reels would be much appreciated.

I have fished Lamson Lightspeed reels for over 10 years at this point and have never been disappointed. I recently acquired a Lightspeed F5 in Fuego and it is terrific. Beautiful to look at and highly functional, it is a perfect compliment to any of my rods.

I have been guiding trout in NC and TN professionally for almost 20 years. The only reels I trust for the light tippet style of fishing we do are Lamson. They will protect even the lightest tippet, and are practically bulletproof.
Konics, Force ULAs, Litespeeds, Radius, Liquids, Gurus and now the New Speedster. I've owned them all and netted thousands of fish for myself and others.
This reel may be the sexiest Lamson I've owned. It's unbelievably light. Drag is as smooth as glass, and it picks up line quickly.
Thanks.

Hello fellow fly fisherman!! I’ve never done a rod review, but this rod a Lamson 9’ 4wt deserves a review after what I put it through yesterday 11/1/2022 on the Owyhee River! I caught 15 unbelievable size browns ranging from 15-24” on this rod and the fights were epic. The reason I’m writing the review is because 2 of these fish, one being my personal best 24” was in between two patches of willow brush and in a very tight space. This brown hit hard and took me through and under willow roots. My rod was tested with scraping the willow branches, under water periods of time and then he took me down stream. I gotta say I thought this rod was going to go at one point. Not a chance, the Lamson rod stood up to the test and delivered a fish of a lifetime for me and not even a scratch. I can’t say enough about these rods!! I’m looking forward to putting my 9’ 7wt to the test this fall and winter!! I’m from Meridian, ID and love the fact that Lamson is right here in Boise!! Thank you Lamson for a great purchase and an incredible rod at a great price!! Hope to see you on the water!!

i have 11 cobalt fly reels! i use the 8’s and 10’s for 3 years an i fish 80-100 days a year primarily fishing permit and tarpon. i have never had a reel fail to perform perfectly !!! the fish i loose are angler error -never the cobalt reel! the drags are smooth as silk and i have been spooled twice with 300 yards of backing !! i have used a lot of great reels - cobalts are far superior to most and second to none !

Had a problem with the running line sliding under the drag knob. Lamson sent me a return label to ship it back to them for free.
Fantastic customer service , which is what you're really buying when you spend your hard earned bucks. They made the reel just perfect for me and I received it back even earlier then they had told me.
It's a wonderful reel, and is just perfect for my trout spey (3 wt) rod. Won't be buying any reels from any other companies. I really like that there's no external counter balance, it's made into the reel.
Be taking it on a 9 day trout fishing excursion that can see the occasional steelhead.....be very interesting on a 3 wt. Very nice product from a really great company.

I'm a fly fishing guide in the California Eastern Sierra. This tool (the midge and standard) is permanently with me every time I'm on the water. Through the years I have broken only one and the company replaced it per their backup warranty.

After several years of use I added a Lamson reel to my old TFO that I really liked so when it came time to look for a new 5 wt I picked up a Purest and headed for the North Fork of the C'DA. Spent over 8 hours fishing a wide range of flies, including hoppers (w/ a dropper) to very small dries.I didn't want to come off the river and had my best day on this river in years! It's a great rod that I look forward to fishing for years to come. I'd definitely recommend it.

The thing I love most about this company is their costumer service. I wrote a review of this reel last night and they called me first thing this morning. We're working on a solution and I'm confident they'll make sure this doesn't hairbrush to me again.
Thanks guys

I've had the guru on my Douglas 5wt rod for a few months now and have fished on a variety of different river, streams, and lakes. I am fully impressed at how smooth the drag is when lowering or upping it, not to mention that it feels like nothing in my hand when casting and walking from pool to pool, plus it looks sweet.
