After my first two outings with my Velocity 5 wt it became my go-to all purpose rod for the Owyhee and South Fork of the Boise rivers. It has the muscle to cast streamers, heavily weighted nymphs and large foam flys with confidence while still enabling me to pivot to small dries when a hatch starts. In short, a versatile “do it all rod” that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their current rod or those looking to add a versatile rod to their quiver that will be able to cover a broad range of potential situations while on your favorite river.
As the Velocity was being developed we spent time on those same rivers figuring out the right balance. Thanks for giving that rod a try, it will handle almost anything you can throw at it!
I just spent 3 days on private water in North Georgia catching dozens of rainbows including setting my PB then breaking it with a new PB that was pushing 8 or 9 pounds. Of the dozens of fish I caught, especially my PB's, I was amazed how much control I had with the Velocity. It did most of the work and left little up to the reel (Litespeed F)...all the while preserving the 5x and 6x tippets we had to scale down to. It is an amazing rod and should be in every quiver when it comes to trout.
The 8Wt Velocity is so light, crisp, and sensitive that it will take the place of a heavy 6wt or 7wt outfit. It will cast heavier lines and big flies better without sacrificing weight or feel. Most importantly, when you get that big trophy Brown to smack your mouse in heavy cover, you'll have a legitimate chance at taking a nice picture together! This is my new go-to rod for Great-Lakes rivers, especially where I may run into a Salmon or Steelhead during the day.
It is great to see the best reel maker expand further into the rod space. I was uncertain they would pull it off but this rod with excellent light action is very precise and the Lockdown feature just means you never drop your reel when knee-deep in a river. Bravo now my son wants one as well...
