So impressed with this reel. Buttery smooth drag. The large, ergonomic drag knob allows for subtle tension adjustment in a broad range that makes this reel just as suited to fishing 6x and light wire hooks as it is to fighting large trout with big hooks and heavy tippet in obstacle-ridden waters. The pickup is excellent and lays the line down tightly and efficiently with a quick spin of the spool. Has a nice purr to it as well. The arbor is generously sized for a 4/5/6 reel and has what I would call perfect line capacity. I was able to fit exactly 100 yards of 20lb micron backing and a 6wt WF floating line with ease, filling out the spool completely without any line crowding under the frame. Oh, and workhorse that it is, this reel is beautifully built with an appealing olive/bronze color and graceful machining. I have been a trout guide for 8 years and have always used the same equipment for guiding as for my own fishing... this year I decided to treat myself with a reel that is primarily for my own use, and I am thrilled that I chose the Guru S -5+. Can't go wrong with this model... I'll probably wind up ordering a couple more. Thanks to all the designers and machinists at Lamson for creating a reel that checks all the boxes!!
I am a big Lamson fan. I have always liked the simplicity of their designs and operational efficiency. I have just purchased a Guru S 5+ for a new 5 weight rig I have put together.
The Guru seems to have morphed from an efficient but plain jane into an understated and quite elegant design. The functionality seems to have been enhanced with improved spool porting to aid the drying of backing following the inevitable dunking i regularly give my reels.
The simple elegance of the design and the lovely olive green anodized finish look far more appealing than many top end offerings that, frankly look over designed and a little bit tacky for my tastes.
A fine effort and please keep up the great work.
I got the Guru S -5+ for my birthday. This reel has already been on many trips. The reason I love it more than my other reels is the sealed drag. I fished in 20 degree weather, dipped my reel in the river and it didn’t freeze. That was amazing! I was so worried my day of fishing was over.
I have been addicted to fishing since I was about 4. Spinning and casting reels are what I grew up on but since then my experiences have included fly fishing the Rio Grande in CO, spearfishing reefs in Destin FL, noodling mud cats in lake Conroe, and chasing Muskie in northern MN. All that to say I love getting my hands on quality gear that performs to its purpose. This reel surpasses my expectations for the price point. This past Sunday I chased down my first redfish in the Texas grass flats and 6 more to boot. The drag is utterly flawless, the reel sounds outstanding, and the look of it on my diamondback rod is Instagram level pretty. This is one of those pieces that stands above mere functionality and edges into the world of art, which is one of the best reasons to pursue fly fishing, the quality and craftsmanship here captures that essence.
Just bought the Guru S -5+ at my local fly shop, very pleased with the craftsmanship of the reel and how light in hand it is, very nice reel and would definitely recommend to anyone. I’ve been fly fishing for 35 years and this is with out a doubt the best reel I’ve ever owned.
Thank you for the review, Eddie, and for your patronage. I’m glad to hear you’re pleased with your purchase, we also feel the Guru S offers a great value. If you find yourself out on the water and take some cool pictures with it, we’d love to see them. You can send them to us at CustomerSupport@waterworks-lamson.com. Happy casting!
