By far the best reel for the price range. I've had it 6 months and have fished the San Juan River in NM and Buffalo River at Henry's Fork in Idaho. The drag system was superb as I hooked a beautiful Rainbow and complimented my fiberglass rod which prevented the fish from breaking my tippet. The construction is excellent with the machined portions adding detail to a beautifully designed reel. I found the operation to be very smooth. A light reel that compliments the balance of my rod well. The reviewer who gave this reel 3 stars (Labeled- Very good but...) and wouldn't recommend it should probably spend another $300 on a reel that completely meets his expectations. In my experience, it's the person who catches the fish, not the reel or rod!
Fiberglass rods are a blast, great to hear the reel paired up nicely with it. Liquids are a super well rounded reel and balance out most outfits nicely!
I saw this 'review' after recent purchase of Liquid 3-pack.
This response is for the 3 star review because it is ridiculous. Not light in weight? Free spooling fly reel? Cutting the drag clicker? Good grief, go buy a budget Walmart reel.
Also, never oil the Lamson seal ring or shaft.
Lamson is one of the finest fly reels made, 5 stars all around, light in weight, performance is unmatched, do not change a thing.
I've fished with Sage, Redignton, and Cabelas reels. I got my first Lamson as part of a second hand package I bought off a friend. At this point, I own 3 liquids, and 1 remix. The drag is bulletproof. The build is good for the price, tolerances are obviously better on the gurus, speedsters, etc... For the price though? Favorite reel.
Great value. Well made, the not-the-lightest-in-class weight is actually OK for rod balance. The drag is really nice... Except! Reeling in drag is quite high. I value reels that freewheel, or nearly so, on retrieve (fast take up of slack when fighting a fish), one can get them to spin with a whack of the palm/fingers. These Liquid reels you have to work at retrieve. I am writing Lamson to see if there is anything I can do to improve this. Oiling the shaft didn't work and I cut the nominal "click-drag" plastic finger, so they aren't solutions.
I can't really recommend buying the reels because of this, (some may not be bothered by the issue) otherwise I would say to do it right away.
Stephen, thank you very much for the feedback. As all of our reels are sealed they rely on a pressure from o-rings around the main spindle to maintain that seal. That being said, we can definitely tune the reel to your liking, please contact us at 208-562-1310 or firstname.lastname@example.org and we can help.
